AI VISIBILITY, EXPLAINED

Why isn't my business showing up on ChatGPT?

Short version: ChatGPT doesn't rank websites. It answers questions from what it can read and cite. When a homeowner asks which roofer or pest control company to call, the model recommends businesses it can verify. If your site gives it nothing verifiable, it recommends whoever did. I know this because I audited 67 contractor websites and measured exactly what the verifiable ones publish.

What actually blocks AI visibility

Real findings from 67 real audits. Each of these is something the model needs and most contractor sites don't provide.
01

No quotable facts. No prices, no warranty terms, no service-area list. ChatGPT answers with concrete facts, not vibes. When it needs a number, it quotes whoever published one. Silence means someone else gets named.

02

No schema markup. This was the single most common finding across all 67 sites. Schema is structured data that tells a machine, in its own format, what your business is, what it does, and where. Without it, the model has to guess, and it would rather cite someone it doesn't have to guess about.

03

Conflicting information across directories. A recurring finding: your site lists one phone number while a directory lists another, or your site shows no street address while two directories each show a different one. When sources disagree, the model can't verify you, so it skips you.

04

No FAQ content. Customers ask the same questions on every call: cost, timing, warranty, service area. Most contractor sites answer none of them in writing, and almost none mark the answers up with FAQ schema. So when the model answers those exact questions, it quotes someone else's site.

05

Broken trust signals. Missing H1 tags, stale copyright years, no street address on your own site. None of these are fatal alone. Together they tell the machine the site isn't maintained, and unmaintained sites don't get cited.

How ChatGPT actually picks a business

It helps to drop the ranking mindset. There is no position one in an AI answer. The model reads a set of sources, summarizes them, and names the businesses its sources describe clearly enough to stand behind. Clarity wins. A small shop with a clean, factual, machine-readable site can beat a bigger competitor whose site is a beautiful mystery.

That is good news if you are the small shop. It is a data problem, not a budget problem. The fixes are unglamorous: publish your numbers, mark up your facts, make every directory agree with your site. I find the same five or six issues on almost every contractor site I audit, which means the bar is low and most of your competitors haven't cleared it.
